Chilly Weather - Play it Safe

Brrrrrr…it’s chilly out there, isn’t it!

 Here are some helpful tips & suggestions you can use to stay warm and safe on the cold, wet, and icy days:

  1. Please leave a few minutes early for games and practices to ensure you are able to travel safely and arrive on time, particularly on icey or stormy days.
  2. Please ensure your player has eaten a healthy, whole foods meal or snack within >1 hour of their practice or game to keep their muscles fuelled and as warm as possible!
  3. Please ensure your child arrives with plenty of warm layers to their game or practice, including a cozy puffy or thermal-lined jacket, gloves/mitts, and toque!  A dry bag can help to keep warm layers and supplies toasty and dry.
  4. Players are welcome and encouraged to wear long thermal layers underneath their uniform shorts and shirt.
  5. Feet get cold in the subzero weather, so please encourage your child to wear thicker socks when necessary - as long as the uniform shorts and top are visible, if your child is unable to fit warmer socks underneath their uniform socks, we leave the choice to you for the safest, warmest socks to wear!
  6. A pair of hand warmers placed inside a player’s gloves are a great way to keep their fingers toasty!
  7. Warm, healthy, hydrating drinks such as hot water with lemon or peppermint tea in a thermos can help warm players up on the inside!
  8. Big fuzzy towels & umbrellas can go a long way to keep players dry and warm when they are waiting to be subbed in or after practice/games on the rainy days.
  9. Parents/coaches/managers can bring a couple of warm fuzzy blankets to games to wrap around players to keep them warm while they are waiting to be subbed in.
  10. Parents/coaches/managers, please ensure your team has 15-20 minutes prior to each game together to warm up - a good warm-up is crucial for injury prevention and safe play!
  11. Parents are strongly encouraged to stay at practices/games in the event that your child becomes too cold and needs your help.
  12. If any child is too cold to play, or experiences physical difficulty in the colder weather (e.g. numbness of extremities, painful feet, difficulty breathing), please take them to a warm, safe, supervised, dry place to warm up until they are ready to return to play safely and happily!
