NSGSC U18 Riptide Repeat as Provincial B Cup Champions
The U18 NSGSC Riptide repeated as Provincial B Champions in style amassing 17 goals over four games against the best competition in BC and giving up no goals. The Riptide played arch-rivals Semiahmoo United in the finals and came away with a well deserved 2 – 0 result.  Coach Dave Sattler has coached many of the girls for the past five years and some girls for 12 years.  Sattler had the following to say to the NS News after the final.  “It has been an amazing ride and what a great way to finish it off.  We have worked very hard for this moment.  When the chips were down and they needed to perform they did!  It is great to win our second championship in a row”.
The U17 NSGSC Snipers participated in their second consecutive Provincial B Cup and improved on last year’s 5th place by reaching the finals only to lose a close match to the Penticton Pinnacles 1 – 0.  Along the way the Snipers beat Dunbar 3 -1 and Nelson 2 – 0 in a great match to reach the final.  Coach Willy Dahm was very proud of his team.
The U14 NSGSC Adrenaline made their Provincial debut in fine fashion going undefeated through the tournament with 3 ties and an impressive 2 – 0 win to take 5th place.  Coach Jackie Steede said the following about her team’s performance.  “The girls performed so well considering we had 2 subs and Jenn out with her hip and Kira a broken ankle.  They were proud of themselves and us of them.  If we had a full team, we would have won the entire thing – or gotten very close!”
This year’s Provincial B Cup was hosted by Richmond Girls Soccer Association and took place in Richmond from July 8th to 11th.

Women's Premier Team Makes History!
The North Shore Girls Soccer Club's Premier team, NSGSC Renegades, is the first womens team from the North Shore to win the MWSL Premier Championship

The  North Shore Girls Soccer Club’s, NSGSC Renegades, made history on Sunday by being  the first Premier women’s  soccer team from the North Shore to ever win the Premier Metro Women’s Soccer League  (MWSL) Championship. Long time MWSL director and past president, Bob Cormack, said “ No North Shore team has won in the last 20 years that I have been involved with the League.  When John Mudge coached 15 years ago they did make the final but never won.” It was a cold and windy March 28th in South Surrey as the NSGSC Renegades played against BGSCC FC Canadians in the MWSL’s  Premier Division championship final. League championships have been dominated the past few years by the 2009 women`s Canadian national silver championship winners, Surrey United,  but this year two new teams battled for the prize. Burnaby scored on an unlucky breakdown of the Renegades defence early on in the first period, yet in the same period the Renegades rallied a reply with Gillian Kilburn tying the game up  by finishing off a powerful shot in what was the third rebound off a busy  Burnaby goalie. Fifteen minutes later, Kirsteen Buchan pounded a one touch pass into the net and the Renegades were up 2-1. Towards the end of the first period, Michelle Young took a penalty shot from 20 yards out that lofted  between the upper bar and the goalies outstretched hands. The second half was a physical, defensive battle, but the Renegades maintained their lead with a 3-1 victory over Burnaby. As winners of the championship game, Coaches Tony Seddon and Steve Lalune look forward to a bye and home game advantage in the Women`s Provincial A cup soccer championships that start in mid April.

NSGSC Hires First Head Coach
Alistair Browne to re-energize North Shore Girls Soccer Club's player development programs.

After an extensive search and interview process, the NSGSC is pleased to announce the hiring of Alistair Browne as the Club’s first head coach.

Alistair brings a life-long passion for the game of 'football' that he will use to build a unique development program for the club. Alistair is well-known to the Club membership as he has previously worked for the North Shore Development Centre, and until being hired by the NSGSC on a permanent basis, was in charge of the youth training programs at Douglas College. Alistair has over twenty years of coaching experience and is recognized as one of the top youth coaches in British Columbia. He is universally well regarded as a coach, player and person.

The decision to hire a head coach was made to re-energize the NSGSC’s player development programs. "Two years ago, when I took over the position of player development for our club, I was fortunate because my predecessors had put so many good programs in place . . . it allowed me to focus on the best model for the future of our club and it was clear that a head coach was needed as a first step" commented Phil Dupasquier, NSGSC Director of Development. "The head coach model is currently used by all the top clubs in North America and I believe it will benefit all of our players".

Hiring occurred over a six month period and was overseen by a head coach committee made up of two outside evaluators and three board members: Anne Farnan - Divisional Coordinator, Jeff Mulock - Divisional VP, and Phil Dupasquier - Director of Development. Applications were received from worthy candidates from around the world. "It wasn't an easy process, we had a lot of great applicants but in the end we found the best one right in our back yard" said Anne Farnan. "Alistair graded out exceptionally well in all our tests and his passion for our club was an intangible that really set him apart from the others."

Alistair's immediate focus will be to establish an Academy for our club and implement specific development programs. "Having a head coach begin and oversee these programs will allow us to ensure we are getting the best for our girls. Alistair's only focus is our girls and he will run a first rate program" added Jeff Mulock. Alistair will also be overseeing the team based development programs and the methodology and implementation of our select team formation.

"I can't wait to get started . . . this is one of the largest clubs in North America and I'm truly honoured to be chosen as your first head coach. I am committed and motivated to make it the best", declared Alistair.

Alistair began his role as Head Coach in January 2010.

VOTING RESULTS FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
VOTING RESULTS FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING OF NORTH SHORE GIRLS SOCCER CLUB ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2009 AT 8:00 P.M.

VOTING RESULTS FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

OF NORTH SHORE GIRLS SOCCER CLUB

 ON  WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2009 AT 8:00 P.M.

The Field Sub-Committee is developing plans to construct a 30,000 square foot air-supported training facility on the lower gravel field at Windsor Secondary School.  Project costs are currently estimated to be $1.6 million.  Proceeding with the project is subject to:

·         Attaining all necessary building and other permits from the District of North Vancouver

·         Satisfactory plans for traffic control, parking and facility access are in-place and fully financed

·         Confirmation that project funding, as discussed below, is in place

·         Confirmation through tender processes that total project costs are reasonably close to the currently estimated $1.6 million

Should the project go ahead, completion is planned for the summer of 2010.

Funding for the training facility project would come from three sources; approximately 50% is expected from Western Economic Diversification Canada through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, approximately $650,000 would be borrowed from Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity), and the remainder would be from cash on hand.

The RInC Program is a cost reimbursement program, with the Club allowed to make 4 funding applications per calendar year.  Because contractor payments precede funding reimbursements, the RInC Program provides a temporary advance facility for organizations such as the NSGSC which, unlike Municipalities, have limited working capital.  It is expected that, should the project proceed, the Club would make use of this advance facility.

Because amounts to be borrowed exceed the authority of the Directors under section 11 (a) (iii) of the Club’s by-laws, the following resolution was introduced and seconded at the Meeting:

"RESOLVED, that, subject to resolution satisfactory to the Board of the NSGSC of the by-law and zoning approval issues necessary to the above project, and subject to the NSGSSC being awarded RInC funding, the Board of the NSGSC is authorized to borrow up to $650,000 from VanCity and accept the RinC grant on the terms described above, on behalf of the NSGSC in order to finance construction of a training facility.”

IN FAVOR 82 AGAINST 0

Motion passed unanimously

More information about the project is posted on the club website at http://www.nsgsc.ca/doc/presentation6.pdf or club members with questions can also contact Mac Nelson or Pat McGuire at macnelson@telus.net or Patrick.mcguire.football@gmail.com.

U17 North Shore Girls Riptide Win Provincial Cup
A year after travelling to Castlegar only to lose a 1-0 heartbreaker in the final, the NSGSC U17 Riptide washed away those memories rolling over the Surrey FC Rangers by a score of 7-0 in winning the BCSA Provincial B Cup at Interriver Park in North Vancouver this past weekend.

After beating a rugged Kamloops team 2-0 on Friday, th e Riptide overcame the adversity of being held to a scoreless tie by the Terrace Kermodes on Saturday, despite out shooting the opposition by an incredible 44-3.  As the shots on goal suggest, the Riptide had the Terrace team pinned in their end for most of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net.

In the Cup Final, played on a warm, humid Sunday afternoon, the Riptide faced a familiar rival in the Surrey Rangers, having edged them in overtime on their way to a Coastal Cup win back in April.  This time out, the Riptide took it to them right from the start and never let up.  Excellent ball movement led to numerous scoring chances, and this time they made them count.  On the strength of goals by Julie VanLeeuwen, Brittney Campbell with two and Hailey Hansen, the Riptide staked out a daunting 4-0 lead by halftime.  The offence continued in the second half with Jackie Hudson tallying early and Campbell and VanLeeuwen adding one more each to their totals for the day.  Tiana Gilchrist earned her third consecutive Provincials shutout with an over-the-head goal line save on a long, looping shot from 35 yards out with five minutes to play.

Immediately following the game, winning Coach Dave Sattler could hardly contain his emotions as he shared a text message with his team that he had just received from fellow soccer coach Mike Matheson.  It read, “Good teams win big games. Great teams make it look easy.” Together with Co-Coach Peter VanLeeuwen and Manager Lorraine Lawson, Sattler congratulated his team on the incredible passion, commitment and focus they had shown over the past 11 months in earning another shot at the Provincial Cup.  Living up to their name, the NSGSC U17 Riptide proved they were truly an unstoppable force...2009 Provincial Champions!!!

NSGSC 2009 Soccer Celebration - A GRAND SUCCESS
Saturday evening’s soccer celebration was an awesome success due to the efforts and contribution of the whole U11 age group and we are very proud to announce that we raised close to $5000.00.

Saturday evening’s soccer celebration was an awesome success due to the efforts and contribution of the whole U11 age group and we are very proud to announce that we raised close to $5000.00.

Each team’s manager and parent volunteers should give themselves a pat on the back for putting together the best silent auction baskets ever and getting your team out to support girl’s soccer on the North Shore.

There are four ladies who managed this years event for the U11s and I would like to recognize each of them.

Margot MacKay – Manager, Cosmos.  Margot took the “bull by the horns” and booked the venue directly after our first meeting.  We had our event direction, date and venue managed within an hour thanks to her initiative.  Margot continued as our liaison with the club as well as basket designer extraordinaire.

Kelly Wakefield – Manager, Spice Girls. Kelly took on of the “extra” silent auction items and secured hundreds of dollars worth of goodies.  Working through the flu on Saturday night, she was the best 50/50 sells person selling over $750.00 of raffle tickets.

Pia O’Keeffe – Manager, Bombers.  Pia answered my call for someone to manage tickets sells, I never had to worry about the finances, and ticket sells ever again.  She allowed her name, email address to go out to the entire club, and kept the progress of the event on track.

Carla Klinksgaard – Manager, Spiders.  Carla sent me a question after the first meeting and found herself in charge of the silent auction baskets.  I have extend an extra thank you to Carla and her family for managing such a huge task which invaded her family room and a lot of Carla’s time.  We also need to thank her husband Todd for helping with the baskets and getting everything to the venue Saturday night.

This was a wonderful evening made possible by a great group of parent volunteers…U11’s parents rock!!!

Divisional Equipment Exchange
An Extra Night (May 8th) has been added for teams that missed the two equipment exchange nights in April.

Date: Tuesday. May 8th, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Where:
Public Storage 1775 Main St.

The NSGSC has changed the uniforms for 2007 season. New UMBRO kits
(jersey, shorts, socks) will be issued in the Fall to all Divisional
teams. Players wishing to keep their current NSGSC jersey and black
shorts may do so - at no charge.  Teams that do not want the jerseys or
shorts are asked to return them in a clean condition.

Please return all Pinnies, and Goal Jerseys to the Equipment Manager
properly labelled in supplied Rubermaid Container.

Teams should keep Flags, Ball's.Nets, unless team future is in question
then return same.

Please note the charges for missing equipment. Goal Keeper jerseys
$40.00, Pinnies $8.00

We have a supply of the "old" black with blue stripes socks which can
be purchased for practice socks - cost $3.00 per pair.  New issue is
white socks, so I would suggest that for "practice" socks these would
be a good investment.

Cheques should be made payable to NSGSC

Honorariums will be extended to qualifying player mentors who are selected to develop their coaching skills. The pilot program will run until August 2007.

This pilot program demonstrates the commitment NSGSC is prepared to make to identify and develop female coaches within our own association. Further application details for players and teams can be found by clicking "Player/Team Mentor" on the menu to the left of your screen.
